The two-day event occurs within the framework of the commemorations of the 15 years of the Honduran people’s resistance to the U.S.-backed coup against Manuel Zelaya perpetrated on June 28, 2009.

The 2024 CELAC Social Meeting stated that the consolidation of counterhegemonic alternatives has been possible thanks to the incessant struggle of the Latin American peoples against neocolonialism.

“Since the defeat of the Free Trade Area of the Americas in 2005, social movements and organizations have sought to positively influence the people in institutional initiatives such as the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP),” it stated.

“This process has been marked by milestones such as the Continental Day for Democracy and Neoliberalism and its meetings in Montevideo (2017) and Havana (2019), the CELAC Social Meeting in Buenos Aires (2023) and the Latin American Day and Caribbean of Integration of Peoples, in Foz de Iguazú (2024),” the 2024 CELAC Social Meeting recalled.

“We recognize that democratic advance, the guarantee of rights and the dispute with reactionary forces is only possible with the participation of social movements and organizations to advance the Latin American integration of peoples,” it stressed.

“The 2024 CELAC Social Meeting will be a new moment in this process, so we invite all organizations and social movements committed to democracy and regional integration to participate. We will advance one step further in the defense of life and the rights historically achieved, with the conviction that together we will continue to build a true regional integration that responds to the aspirations of our peoples.”
