Witnesses from Reuters said the quake felt "prolonged, but not very intense" in some areas of Guatemala and El Salvador.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 shook southern Mexico and some Central American countries Friday but, given its great depth, no damage or casualties were reported.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake had its epicenter 14 kilometers east-northeast of Puerto Madero, in the state of Chiapas, very close to the border with Guatemala and had a depth of 67.9 kilometers.

Witnesses from Reuters said the quake felt "prolonged, but not very intense" in some areas of Guatemala and El Salvador.

The movement was also felt in Mexico City and led some to leave their homes and places of work. However, no damages or victims had been reported.

In September of 2017, two powerful earthquakes hit the center of the country and left more than 470 dead.
