The Interpol red notice was given to the Lebanese authorities and has not been referred to the country's judiciary, Reuters reported on Thursday.

In similar cases in the past, Lebanon has seized the passports of the wanted citizens, but they do not detain them.

Ghosn, who was facing charges in Japan relating to alleged financial crimes, managed to flee Japan to Istanbul, Turkey. From Istanbul, Ghosn flew to the Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut.

Citing unnamed sources, Reuters said a delay to his trial and a strict ban on communicating with his wife motivated Ghosn to go ahead with a plan to use a private security company to smuggle him out of Japan via private jet.

On Wednesday, Ghosn met with Lebanese President Michel Aoun at the presidential palace in Baabda, but the details of the meeting were not disclosed to the public.

The ex-Nissan boss, who holds French, Lebanese, and Brazilian citizenship, was once considered a Lebanese presidential candidate and a top player in the country's politics.
