The majority of the newly found geoglyphs seem to have been created by the Paracas culture over 2,000 years ago.

More than 25 new geoglyphs carved into a stretch of coastal desert in southern Peru have been found by archeologists using drones to scour the area.

The news was reported by Peru's Culture Ministry on Monday.

The majority of the newly found geoglyphs, which include figures of a killer whale, as well as a woman dancing, seem to have been created by the Paracas culture over 2,000 years ago, according to Eye Witness News.

Johny Isla, an archeologist in charge of the culture ministry's regional conservation projects, said the date places the geoglyphs hundred of years before the nearby giant drawings, which were made by people of the Nazca culture.

Considered as archeological enigmas by researchers, 25 more geoglyphs previously pinpointed by residents have also been mapped with the help of drone technology.

These unnamed flying devices “have allowed us to broaden our documentation and discover new groups of figures,” Isla said while touring the geoglyphs in Palpa province. “We still haven’t walked among them, we’ve only taken pictures. This is the first stage of research,” Isla said.

However, Peruvian the culture ministry released a statement affirming that unlike the Nazca lines, many of which are only visible by flying above, most of the so-called Palpa Lines, which were drawn into hillsides, are visible from below.

“In total, we’re talking about 1,200 years in which geoglyphs were produced” in the region, Isla affirmed.

The Nazca Lines were declared a Unesco world heritage site in 1994 and these geoglyphs, and others, are brilliant reminders of Peru's vast and rich culture before the arrival of Spanish conquistadores.
