A tragic incident occurred on the northwest coast of Tasmania, where 157 whales have died after becoming stranded, according to local authorities.
Teams composed of veterinarians, wildlife specialists, and marine conservationists have been working tirelessly to assist around 90 whales that survived the initial stranding near Arthur River.
Brendon Clark, a local official, stated that the whales had been stranded for 24 to 48 hours, and every possible effort was being made to return them to the water.
However, adverse weather conditions have hindered rescue attempts, which could prolong the situation in the coming days.
Biologist Kris Carlyon mentioned that “all remaining live whales will be euthanized. The longer they remain stranded, the more they will suffer. All alternative options have proven unsuccessful. Euthanasia is always the last resort.”
It has been determined that the animals appear to be false killer whales or black orcas, though the cause of the stranding remains unknown.
This is not an isolated incident; in 2020, at least 470 pilot whales were stranded in western Tasmania, with around a hundred being saved and returned to the open sea.
In 2022, another 230 whales were stranded on a remote beach in Macquarie Harbour, with half of them perishing.
