2024 Could Be the Hottest Year on Record, Warns WMO

Furthermore, it is expected that the decade from 2015 to 2024 will be remembered as the hottest ever recorded, with alarming increases in glacier ice loss, rising sea levels, and ocean warming.

The Temperatures in 2024 can Reach Records: WMO says
A new report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) suggests that 2024 is on track to become the hottest year in history, following a series of months with exceptionally high average temperatures. This analysis was presented during the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
According to the report, the global average air temperature at the surface between January and September has increased by 1.54 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, a phenomenon largely driven by warming associated with the El Niño phenomenon.
Furthermore, it is expected that the decade from 2015 to 2024 will be remembered as the hottest ever recorded, with alarming increases in glacier ice loss, rising sea levels, and ocean warming.
Celeste Saulo, WMO Secretary-General, emphasized that while monthly or annual data do not indicate a complete failure to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, it is crucial to understand that each additional fraction of a degree in global warming has significant consequences. “Each additional increase raises the frequency and intensity of extreme events and climate risks,” Saulo warned.
The Paris Agreement aims to limit the long-term increase in global temperature to well below two degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels and to continue efforts to restrict warming to 1.5 degrees. The international community thus faces an urgent challenge to meet these goals and mitigate the effects of climate change.
