“The importance of this operation lies in the protection it offers to the inhabitants of Cauca, who have been threatened by organizations such as Dagoberto Ramos or Jaime Martínez (two fronts of the Central Staff, the main dissident of the FARC). This operation greatly weakens its destructive capacity,” said Velásquez.

The explosives belonged to the Dagoberto Ramos structure of the western block Jacobo Arenas and were seized in the La Luz path of the Tacueyó district, in the municipality of Toribío.

According to Velásquez, this operation “weakens the armed group’s military capacity, affects its financial network and protects the biodiversity of Cauca by preventing exposure to pollutants such as lead and mercury,” in addition to strengthening security in the territory.

One thousand kilos of marijuana, 800 hand-made grenades and two explosivists were also seized, including ‘El Paisa’.

For several months, the south-west of Colombia has been experiencing an escalation and a resurgence of violence by armed groups, especially by part of the Central General Staff (CME), the main dissident of the FARC, Following the breakdown of peace negotiations with the Government. This escalation of the conflict has particularly affected the civilian population.
