Türkiye has promoted a call among UN member states to halt all transfers of weapons, ammunition, and military equipment to Israel, as they are “likely to be used in the occupied Palestinian territories.”

The call was initially co-sponsored by 18 countries, led by Türkiye and the Palestinian Government, and has since gained the support of 35 more nations, in addition to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Most signatories are Muslim countries, joined by nations such as China, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, among others.
Among European countries, only Norway supported the call, while no member of the European Union endorsed it. Spain chose not to join, seeking instead a unified stance with the EU.
The letter, sent to the UN Secretary-General, the Security Council, and the General Assembly, stated: “We must act urgently to stop the extreme human suffering and destabilization that could lead us to open war in the region.” To this end, member states “must take immediate steps.”
The arms embargo on Israel, advocated by pro-human rights and pro-Palestinian groups, has gained little traction among countries that traditionally supply arms to Israel, including the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy.
Of these countries, only the United Kingdom has taken a restrictive but symbolic measure: the suspension of 30 arms sale licenses out of more than 300 in place for British companies.
