Former U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed for a new mass deportation of Venezuelans to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador under the Alien Enemies Act, a law compared to those used by Nazi Germany. This controversial legal mechanism allows the expulsion of non-citizens without guaranteeing their right to a fair trial or the opportunity to appear before a court.
On Sunday, March 16, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele announced the arrival of 238 alleged members of the criminal organization Tren de Aragua, deported from the United States at Trump’s request.
In exchange, the U.S. government paid $6 million. This forced deportation is carried out under the Alien Enemies Act, a law not used since World War II, which expands the government’s wartime authority to expel foreigners without due process.
Under this law, any Venezuelan arbitrarily labeled as a member of Tren de Aragua can be captured, deported from the U.S., and imprisoned in El Salvador without prior investigation or trial. This measure has sparked strong criticism for its discriminatory nature and violation of human rights.

Overwhelming Rejection in Venezuela to Trump’s Desition
The First Intelligence Agency of Venezuela, Hinterlaces, published a survey reflecting the majority rejection of this measure by the Venezuelan population. The results were decisive:
- 89% of respondents opposed the application of the Alien Enemies Act, while only 6% approved it.
- 84% believed this measure has been promoted and supported by opposition leader María Corina Machado, known for her attempts to undermine the legitimate government of President Nicolás Maduro. Only 9% disagreed with this claim.
