India has declared a week of mourning for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the age of 92 in New Delhi.
The Government of India announced a seven-day period of national mourning in honor of Singh. From December 26, 2024, to January 1, 2025, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across the country, and no official entertainment will occur during this time.
Manmohan Singh is remembered as a visionary leader who played a crucial role in India’s economic transformation.
His political career began as Minister of Finance from 1991 to 1996, where he implemented reforms that liberalized the Indian economy and laid the foundations for sustained growth.
He subsequently served as Prime Minister for two consecutive terms, from 2004 to 2014, becoming one of the longest-serving leaders in the country’s history, alongside iconic figures such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
Throughout his political life, Singh was a strong advocate for inclusive development and economic modernization.
In his later years, he continued his work in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, representing the state of Rajasthan and being part of the Indian National Congress (INC), which is the main opposition party today.
Manmohan Singh’s legacy will endure in India’s political history, particularly for its impact on the economic reforms that transformed the country into one of the most dynamic emerging economies in the world.
