It transpired that a ceasefire was achieved. The parties agreed to return to their barracks and allow a neutral force into the area of combat.

The Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, met this Sunday with the Libyan ambassador in Algiers, Salah Hamma Mohamed Bakda, to whom he conveyed his country’s concerns regarding the clashes between armed militias that took place in Tajura, Tripoli district, with at least nine dead.

The fighting, which took place between Friday night and early on Saturday in the Al Qarabulli region, also resulted in 16 injuries. They occurred between the Joint Force in Misrata (city east of Tripoli) and the local militia of the Rahbat Dorou brigade.

Attaf asked the Libyan ambassador to convey to the warring parties to act with restraint and put the interests of the people above all others. He stressed the importance of stopping fighting between brothers, thereby preserving security and stability in Libya and the region.

He also urged that all the capacities of the North African nation be focused on accelerating the political process in search of unity and holding elections as soon as possible to elect representatives of society.

During this day, the Qarabulli Council of Notables ended the fighting and the rival militias agreed to a ceasefire and decided to withdraw to their barracks.

According to local media, the ceasefire will be permanent and the warring parties will allow the deployment of a neutral force.

After the fighting, the University of Tripoli announced that it is resuming its teaching activities, which had been suspended following the start of the escalation.

Before the fighting, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, considered a strong man in the country, announced his troops’ advance into areas of the south-west controlled by the Government of National Unity (GUN), based in Tripoli.

Haftar claimed that the movement of his columns was intended to increase security in the region and guard the border. The high-ranking military is opposed to the GUN, which is internationally recognized.

For several years the nation has been divided into two administrations. The west is controlled by the Government of National Unity, led by Abdelhamid Dbebiba, and the east by Haftar.
