On Monday, Mexico’s President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the emblem of her administration will be the image of a young Indigenous woman holding the flag of her country.

“The features of this young woman are a recognition of the women of our Indigenous communities. With this, the Government of Mexico expresses its respect and admiration for the deep humanist roots that identify these ethnic groups and their ancestral resistance through their languages, cultures, and traditions,” she said.

“The young woman looks firmly and hopefully to the left, symbolizing the people’s struggle to achieve justice and freedom. She proudly honors the legacy of her ancestors, which is why she wears traditional clothing. Her hair, blowing in the wind, evokes the steady progress of our nation toward a future of well-being and prosperity.”

“She firmly carries our flag, a national symbol that reveals the history of struggle that has shaped our people, representing unity, hope, and the pride of being Mexican. She faces with determination—hence, her clenched fist—the challenges of a promising future of freedom, equality, and peace as a result of justice,” Sheinbaum stated.

The text reads, “October 1, 2024. A day for history. Claudia Sheinbaum is officially president of Mexico.”

On Monday night, Sheinbaum hosted a dinner for several heads of state, prime ministers, and representatives from various countries who will attend her inauguration.

The dinner, held at the Museum of Mexico City, was attended by U.S. First Lady Jill Biden, Vice Chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, Tie Ning, and Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs.

Also in attendance were the presidents Miguel Diaz-Canel (Cuba), Lula da Silva (Brazil), Gabriel Boric (Chile), Gustavo Petro (Colombia), Xiomara Castro (Honduras), and Bernardo Arevalo (Guatemala).

On Tuesday, Sheinbaum’s inauguration ceremony will take place at the Legislative Palace of San Lázaro, where outgoing President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador will hand her the presidential sash. Later, the presidents of invited countries will move to Mexico’s National Palace, where the official greeting and photo will take place, followed by a lunch offered to the heads of state, government, and delegations.
