United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the increasing violence in Syria’s coastal regions, where widespread summary executions, including entire families, have been reported. On his official X account, Guterres demanded an immediate end to the bloodshed and emphasized the need to protect civilians. “Perpetrators of violations must be held accountable,” he stated firmly.
Massacres in Coastal Syria
Recent clashes between Syrian security forces and armed groups loyal to the former government of Bashar al-Assad have resulted in over a thousand deaths, according to local media. Among the casualties are at least 745 civilians, reportedly killed in targeted massacres against the Alawite minority over the weekend in the Mediterranean coastal region.
International Alarm
Geir Pedersen, the U.N. Special Envoy for Syria, also expressed deep concern over the rising violence in these regions and urged all parties to refrain from escalating tensions. Pedersen highlighted alarming reports of intense fighting and killings in the area, emphasizing the critical importance of adhering to international humanitarian law.
“It is essential to stick to the facts and ensure that all parties act with restraint, prioritizing the protection of civilians,” Pedersen stated. He called on all stakeholders to avoid any actions that might further worsen the situation on the ground.
A Call for Moderation and Justice
Both Guterres and Pedersen stressed the necessity of ensuring that those responsible for these atrocities face justice. As tensions rise, the United Nations reiterated its commitment to pursuing a peaceful and sustainable resolution for Syria, placing the safety and rights of civilians at the forefront.
