Previously, through social media, Milei stated that “despite differences that now seem minor, having had the chance to know him in his kindness and wisdom was a true honor.”
“As president, as an Argentine, and, above all, as a man of faith, I bid farewell to the Holy Father and stand with all of us who are receiving this sad news today,” he added.
“Argentina, a country with a long Catholic tradition and homeland of Pope Francis, deeply mourns the passing of His Holiness and sends its condolences to the Bergoglio family. The President of the Nation shares in this sorrowful moment with all those who profess the Catholic faith and who found in the Supreme Pontiff a spiritual leader,” the Presidency expressed before Milei’s message.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio became in 2013 “the first Argentine to lead the Catholic Church and guide it with dedication and love from the Vatican,” it added.
“It acknowledges his commitment to bringing austerity to the Holy See through his pastoral gestures,” the Argentine Presidency stated, concluding the official message with a phrase in Latin: “may perpetual light shine upon him, and may he rest in peace.”
