The second university march is against the intention to veto the law that provides for increased resources for public entities.

The university sector and workers of Argentina mobilized this Wednesday in Buenos Aires (capital) in rejection of the budget cut promoted by the government of President Javier Milei, and call on the National Congress to insist on the Financing Act for study houses.

This second university march has been led by academics, workers, trade unions, social movements, human rights organizations and piqueteras, because the Argentine president anticipated that he would veto the law providing for increased resources for public entities.

The march’s organizers expressed their disagreement with budget cuts, privatization of services and elimination of scholarship programs, which are critical to ensuring access to quality public education.

Likewise, during the day, together with teachers and students of Buenos Aires, there are also marches in different cities of the nation such as Rosario, Córdoba and Mendoza, among others.

We call for them to join us in a new federal mobilization in defense of the public university and the scientific system, said the National Interuniversity Council (CIN) in a statement.

Since last week, the dispute between the Executive and universities has increased, when teachers and non-teachers of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) went on strike to defend their salary and the University Financing Law that was approved by the Senate, and establishes a wage recomposition for teaching and non-teaching staff from December 2023 with an impact equivalent to 0.14 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The president of the nation also announced the privatization of Aerolíneas Argentinas after the publication of the decree of privatization in the official bulletin.

The national executive put up for sale the airline’s flag line, in the midst of the conflict with the aeronautics guild over the increase in wages in the sector and is part of the Government’s intentions to disappear the state enterprise under the pretext of achieving fiscal balance.

In addition, the decision to privatize the airline is resumed after it has been removed from the list of institutions to be sold.
