On Wednesday, a heavy police operation was deployed around the Argentinean Congress, which remains fenced off in view of the announcement of a demonstration in defense of public, free and quality universities.

This day, the Chamber of Deputies must determine whether to support or reject a veto by President Javier Milei of an education funding law, a measure condemned by students, teachers, non-teaching workers and members of social, trade union and human rights organizations.
As part of the protest actions, groups of students took over several faculties throughout the country, among them those of Psychology and Philosophy and Letters at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).
Demonstrations of this kind are also taking place in Córdoba, Jujuy, Santa Fe and other provinces, where vigils, symbolic embraces, public classes, noisy protests and assemblies have also been held.
In statements to the press, the president of the Philosophy Students’ Centre at the UBA, Isabel González, said that the protests were aimed at denouncing the damage caused by the government’s policies.
‘We are watching the deputies. If they betray the popular vote, they have to be ready for the students to go out and deepen this fight because if they are going to continue insisting on something that has no legitimacy, we will be up to the task of defending the university,’ he said.
For its part, the National Universities Union Front called on legislators to reverse the appeal presented by the president and to listen to the more than 1.5 million people who participated in a federal march on the 2nd of this month.
In addition, they warned about the serious salary situation in the sector, the lack of budget for scholarships and research.
