During the UN General Assembly, Argentina positioned itself as the only country to vote against a resolution aimed at “intensifying efforts to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.”

This negative vote occurred in a context where 170 nations supported the measure, while 13 chose to abstain, including countries like North Korea, Iran, and Russia.

This rejection adds to a recent vote where Argentina was also the sole country opposing a resolution on the rights of indigenous peoples, contributing to the country’s increasing isolation on the international stage.

The document approved by the UN emphasizes the need to address digital violence, highlighting its disproportionate impact on women and girls. The resolution seeks to promote education and civil society participation to eradicate this issue.

Argentina’s vote has faced criticism from various political and social sectors in the region. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil and Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez condemned Argentina’s decision, linking it to neofascist trends and criticizing the potential impact of such stances on human rights globally.

Rodríguez stated on her social media: “Fascism knows no bounds in annihilating human beings. It is the same justification for the mass murder of Palestinian women and children in Gaza. Peoples rise against these neofascist and neo-Nazi expressions!”

Gil also expressed his outrage, questioning “how far one can go by trying to crawl beyond the limits reserved for flatterers”.

This episode reflects a significant shift in Argentine foreign policy under President Milei, who has expressed his intention to adopt a new “doctrine” prioritizing fascist and neo-Nazi values.
