Meanwhile, the members opposed to the veto only gained 160 votes, six less than needed to protect the Finance Act.

Argentina Responds to the Veto of University Funds

In response, Argentine trade union organizations such as the Frente Sindical de Universidades Nacionales called for a total strike on Thursday.

“We repudiate the deputies who voted against the popular mandate to defend the university” and “we call for a total strike on Thursday 10 and to consolidate the plan of struggle in defense of the salary and the university budget”, expressed the National Universities Union Front in a statement.

“The will of the people has been defrauded and democracy has given way to the anti-republican management of governing by decree of the National Government. It formed a political alliance that is unable to move in the face of suffering of large majorities, in the face of the call from all sectors to support what is fundamental: public university, public education”, he denounced.

The Association of Teachers of the University of Buenos Aires (ADUBA) and the Staff Association of the University of Buenos Aires (APUBA) issued a hard statement entitled “The UBA is in mourning”, where they called for a total strike, also on Thursday.

“The UBA is in mourning. The legislators once again ignored the popular mandate. On a sultry day, they put the future of an entire country at stake”, ADUBA published in its X account.

“The scandalous result in the Chamber of Deputies threatens to destroy the Public University. And the workers will defend it, they denounced.

Likewise, the Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich has already sent uniformed officers to repress violently the demonstrations by students, workers and teachers who are already stationed in front of the Congress areas.

The university funding law, approved by Congress on 13 September, provided for the updating of funds for operating expenses of universities due to the change in the inflation rate, which in August stood at 236.7% year-on-year.

It also ordered a recomposition of university salaries, also taking into account inflation.

This is the second time that Milei has successfully vetoed a law: last September, the Chamber of Deputies approved a veto by the president on a rule which established a new formula for updating pensions, The measure was rejected by masses of retired people who were repressed by police forces.
