Her story as an activist in various human rights organizations began with the search for her son, Augusto María, who was forcibly disappeared during an illegal operation while serving in the military in 1976.

Like many other Argentine women who faced the disappearance, detention, and death of their children, Laura joined the Mothers of Mayo Square movement, committed to denouncing human rights violations and promoting mental health among the victims of state violence.

Later, together with her husband, lawyer Augusto Conte, and Emilio Mignone, she co-founded the Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS), where Laura provided psychological support to those who had been victims of state repression.

The text reads, “Laura Jordan de Conte, a Mother of Mayo Square and tireless defender of human rights, has passed away. At 93 years old, one of the most emblematic figures in the fight for memory, truth and justice says goodbye.”

“Laura witnessed firsthand the psychological aftermath of state violence during the dictatorship. She had an unshakable ethic, faith in the future, and belief in the possibilities of reparation. She leaves behind a tremendous legacy, as well as her unwavering dedication. We’ll miss her,” CELS stated, emphasizing her work as a true commitment to society.

Jordan, who also served as vice president of Open Memory and was a member of the Provincial Commission for Memory, was a social activist who participated in countless women’s events and the first LGBTQ+ Pride marches in Argentina.

Among her numerous recognitions, she was honored by the Parliament of the City of Buenos Aires for her work in the field of human rights.
