Violence continues to escalate in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, as armed gangs tighten their grip on the city.
On Monday, an attack on two public transport vehicles in the Delmas neighborhoods left one person dead and several others injured, some critically. The deceased, one of the drivers, was killed instantly, while the injured were rushed to the overcrowded University Hospital of Peace, which is already overwhelmed by daily gunshot victims from across the country.
The attack occurred in Delmas 19 and Delmas 31, areas recently seized by armed gangs amid apparent indifference from authorities. The coalition responsible for the violence, known as Vivre Ensemble (“Living Together”), is led by former police officer Jimmy Chérizier, alias “Barbecue.” In nearby Delmas 25 and Delmas 27, heavily armed men also targeted pedestrians, who managed to escape the gunfire.
Haiti, the poorest nation in the Americas, faces a dire security crisis, with gangs controlling approximately 85% of the capital. The situation has left residents in fear and authorities struggling to regain control. The international community has expressed concern over the deteriorating conditions, but effective solutions remain elusive.
