A man was arrested this afternoon while climbing the Eiffel Tower a few hours before the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games, which has led to the temporary closure of the monument as a precaution.

A police source told a press agency that the individual was spotted at 14.45 local time (12.45 GMT) while climbing, and law enforcement quickly intervened to arrest him. Police began escorting visitors around 3.30 pm but a group was locked in for half an hour on the second floor before they could leave.

The man was seen scaling the 330-meter tall tower in the afternoon. It’s unclear where he began his ascent, but he was spotted just above the Olympic rings adorning the second section of the monument, just above the first viewing deck.

The mining authorities decided to close the monument for an hour, until it could be intercepted and then reopened normally.

The police source declined to provide details on the identity of the climber and said that this matter is the responsibility of the Paris Prosecutor’s Office.
