The majority of deaths took place after a building on construction collapsed, 11 in total, while the other seven were recorded elsewhere in the city, according to the breakdown by the Bangkok government, reported on its Facebook account.

The governor of Bangkok, Chadchart Sittipunt, said on Sunday that the priority is the rescue operation in Chatuchak, 48 hours after the earthquake, saying there are “signs” that there are survivors in some areas of the collapse.

At a press conference, the deputy governor of Bangkok, Tavida Kamolvej, noted that the 78 missing are people who are believed to be trapped among the rubble of the 30-story tower that collapsed in Chatuchak, whereas previously the authorities had estimated at 83 the missing.

Authorities recovered a new body today from the pile of rubble left behind by the collapsed building.

The governor said on Sunday that engineers have inspected 723 buildings in the capital and only two had been declared unsafe after the strong earthquake, with the epicenter about 1,000 kilometers away between the Burmese cities of Mandalay and Sagaing.

In Burma, the authorities estimated on Saturday 1,644 dead, 3,408 wounded and 139 missing from the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the central-northern part of the country.
