At Least 25 Dead in Boat Tragedy in Western DRC

At least 25 people have died in a boat accident in western Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to local authorities cited by Actualité.
“The provisional toll stands at 25 dead and 30 rescued. The main cause was nighttime navigation. The vessel departed from a port at 11 p.m. and was unbalanced,” said Alexis Mputu, spokesperson for the government of Mai-Ndombe province.
The tragedy occurred on the Kwa River. Among the passengers were football players from the village of Ngambomi, returning from a match in the city of Mushie.
Renacle Kwatiba, head of the district where the accident happened, stated that his team has been unable to reach the site due to a lack of fuel.
