According to the Yemeni news agency Saba, rescue teams have so far recovered the bodies of 27 people and managed to save eight others injured, while indicating that the search for at least three people still missing in the Wesab al Safil district continues.
According to the governor of Dhamar, Mohamed al Bukhaiti, most of the victims are from the village of Al Jarf, where all access and exit roads to the village have become impassable.
In addition local authorities in the district of Melhan in the northern province of Mahweet, say communities in flood-affected areas remain isolated, putting inhabitants in danger of starvation if food supplies run out.
According to the UN Population Fund, landslides caused by the collapse of three dams ripped through several highland villages in Melhan on Tuesday night, leaving 41 people missing, affecting 1,020 families, destroying 40 homes, and partially damaging 230 others.
These floods add to the one of 27, when floods caused the collapse of a dam in Al Mahweet province in northwestern Yemen, causing at least 33 deaths and the destruction of several homes.
Yemen has been facing a thunderstorm since early August that is causing large, intermittent floods throughout the country, which are wreaking havoc in the northern and western regions.
