“Very dangerous and destructive hurricane Beryl has come and gone and has done an immense destruction that is suffering our entire nation”, said Ralph Gonsalvez.

The Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, reported on Monday afternoon that at least one person died and that there is “immense destruction” by the passage of “dangerous and destructive” hurricane Beryl in the Union, Mayreau and Canouan islands. “At least one person died and more may have died. We don’t know yet,” lamented the San Vincentian Prime Minister.

Gonsalves detailed on NBC Radio that a “very dangerous and destructive hurricane Beryl has come and gone and has done an immense destruction that is suffering our entire nation. Hundreds of families seek their future. Union Island has been devastated. The reports I have received indicate that 90 per cent of the houses have been damaged or destroyed”.

In addition, in a video shared on his Facebook account, the president explained with regret: “We have not yet received preliminary reports for lack of communication, but the islands of Mayreau and Canouan are estimated to have had similar damage to Union”.

Finally, he urged the island nation’s citizens to take shelter in their homes overnight as they continue to be under the effects of a tropical storm. ” While our agencies are desperately trying to re-establish communications with certain sections and determine the extent of the damage,” Gonsalves said.

Beryl, which formed extremely quickly and early in the Atlantic, continues its way through the southern Caribbean as a major hurricane after wreaking havoc in Grenada, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, and threatens even the southern Dominican Republic and Haiti, reported the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

In the hurricane season in the Atlantic basin, which began on June 1, three tropical storms have formed so far: Alberto, Beryl and Chris.
