Edgar Cortez, departmental commander of the La Paz police, explained to the media that the incident occurred on Friday afternoon near the rural municipality of Chuma, about 233 kilometers from the city of La Paz.
The officer reported that was traveling from La Paz to Chuma, the capital of Muñecas province, and fell into a ravine between 80 and 100 meters, apparently due to “steering and brake failures,” said Cortez.
The driver of the vehicle was injured in the accident and was taken to the city of El Alto for treatment and told police investigating the incident “that the possible cause would be mechanical failures”.
According to Cortez, eight people were also assisted and taken to the hospital in Chuma and a clinic in the city of El Alto, neighboring La Paz, depending on the severity of their injuries.
“As a result of this, we have six people who have died, all of them of age. The same have been taken to the headquarters of the Chuma Mayor’s Office,” he said.
The relatives of the deceased signed a “notice of objection” to the legal removal of the bodies so that they could be immediately buried.
The EFE agency points out that accidents on Bolivian roads cause around 1,400 deaths and 40,000 injuries each year, and are mostly due to human failures that can be prevented, according to official data.
