An assault by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the Zamzam camp in western Sudan has resulted in 16 deaths and 42 injuries. This incident is part of an escalation of hostilities between this militia and the regular army in various regions of the African nation.

The attack, which occurred during the night of last Sunday, targeted the Zamzam settlement and other residential districts in Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. According to the non-governmental organization Resistance Committees of Al Fasher, most of the casualties are women, children, and elderly individuals, labeling the event as a war crime aimed at forcing residents to abandon the camp.
Al Fasher, the last stronghold of the army in western Sudan, has been under siege by the RSF for months, experiencing heavy assaults with heavy weaponry against residential areas, markets, and even refugee camps. The Zamzam camp, the largest in Darfur, houses over half a million people and is located about twelve kilometers south of Al Fasher.
The conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, has led to tens of thousands of deaths and has made Sudan home to the worst internal displacement crisis globally. Since May 10, Al Fasher has witnessed clashes between the army and RSF despite international warnings about fighting in the city, which serves as a humanitarian operations center for five states in Darfur.
The United Nations has reiterated its concern regarding the situation in Al Fasher and North Darfur. It also warned about famine affecting various areas of Sudan that threatens to spread due to increasing displacement caused by conflict—currently estimated at 11.5 million internally displaced persons within Sudan and 3.2 million outside its borders.
This latest assault by the RSF coincides with an attack carried out on Friday when four people were killed and ten others injured due to artillery shelling by troops against the Abu Shouk displaced persons camp in El Fasher city, located in North Darfur state.
