Bangladesh: Flash Floods Left At Least 52 Deads So Far

At least 52 people have died in recent days in Bangladesh due to heavy rains and flash floods that have hit especially the east of the country, affecting more than 5.4 million people so far.

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, published on Thursday, at least 21 people died in the last 24 hours in eleven districts in the east and south-east of the country, Bringing the death toll since the onset of heavy rainfall last week to 52.

Feni and Cumilla districts, both in the east, have recorded the highest death toll since the onset of rainfall, with 17 and 14 deaths respectively. In addition, one person remains missing in the north-east of Moulvibazar.

More than 5.4 million people have been affected by flash floods caused by the rains, and authorities have opened more than 3,400 temporary shelters, according to the ministry’s bulletin.

The authorities also indicated that they have allocated $378,000 in aid to those affected, including the delivery of more than 20,000 tons of rice and some 15,000 packages of food.

The rains will continue for the next three days, according to authorities’ estimates, mostly light or moderate, although some parts of the country are expected to experience heavy rainfall.
