Bangladesh economist and civil society leader Muhammad Yunus will take the nation’s leadership on an interim basis, following the resignation and evasion of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by Bangladesh last Monday.

The interim government is seeking to restore order in the streets, first of all, after intense days of fighting that have left some 400 dead.

The decision was made after the Bangladeshi president and security officials met.

Student demonstrations in Bangladesh began on 1 July against a quota of 30 percent for public employment posts reserved for descendants of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War fighters, who they considered discriminatory.

The protests were organized by the Student Movement Against Discrimination, and triggered the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
