The Ministry of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology (MIST) of Barbados, plays a crucial role in the efficiency of government, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley emphasized following the swearing-in of Senator Jonathan Reid as the new minister.
The ceremony took place at State House, where Reid was officially sworn in by President Dame Sandra Mason.
Prime Minister Mottley highlighted how technology has altered public expectations, noting that when these expectations surpass what the government can realistically deliver, trust in governance erodes. She stressed the urgent need to transition the country from an analogue to a digital environment, ensuring that government systems keep pace with citizens’ growing expectations.
In addressing science and technology, Mottley pointed to the underperformance of many young people in Mathematics and Science. She revealed that CARICOM heads of government recently agreed to establish an Educational Transformation Commission to drive improvement in these critical areas.
The prime minister also underscored the importance of industry, stating that Barbados’ industrial infrastructure has remained largely unchanged for decades and now requires renewal and revitalization.
Senator Reid described his new ministry as one of “incredible opportunities” and a key collaborator in advancing government initiatives. He emphasized the potential of digital transformation and technology to drive efficiency and innovation across various sectors.
Reid, who previously served as an advisor to Prime Minister Mottley and later as chief of staff, brings extensive experience to the role. His educational background includes Christ Church Foundation School, Barbados Community College, and The University of the West Indies.
