The city of Beit Lahia, located in the northern Gaza Strip, was declared a disaster zone this Wednesday due to the ongoing bombardments by the Israeli military.
According to reports from Al Jazeera, the municipality made this decision following an Israeli attack that resulted in the deaths of eight people, raising the total number of fatalities in the northern enclave to at least 350 over the past week. “We declare that the city is a disaster area due to the Israeli extermination war and siege.”
Currently, Beit Lahia lacks food, water, hospitals, doctors, basic services, and communications,” stated the municipality in a statement cited by Al Jazeera.
Since the onset of the conflict in October 2023, more than 43,160 people have lost their lives in the Gaza Strip, according to data provided by the Gazan Ministry of Health on Wednesday.
In the last 24 hours alone, at least 102 people have died while Israel continues its severe siege in the northern enclave, where over a thousand deaths have been recorded in the past 25 days.
The majority of fatalities are concentrated in the north, where a recent Israeli airstrike on a building in Beit Lahia left at least 93 dead early Tuesday morning. The humanitarian situation in the region is rapidly deteriorating, exacerbating the crisis faced by Gaza’s residents.
