“This funding will not only restore power, but will make the region’s power system stronger and more capable and reduce the frequency and duration of power outages while extreme weather events become more frequent,” Biden said Sunday during a stop in St. Pete Beach.
The funding announcement will go toward six Department of Energy projects to strengthen the region’s electric grid, according to the White House as two million people remain without energy in Florida.
Last Friday, Biden signed the order declaring Florida a disaster zone, allowing its residents to access grants to cover temporary housing costs and home repairs, low-interest loans to cover losses not covered by insurance and other business owner programs.
The Commissioner indicated that, following this statement, 250,000 people have requested help. Also, the Emergency Management Office (FEMA) has delivered 1.2 million meals, more than 300,000 litres of water and two million gallons of fuel.
On Friday, there were nearly two million customers without electricity in Florida after 48 hours of Hurricane Milton, which has claimed the lives of 17 people and left hundreds of homes flooded and destroyed.
As previously reported by the White House, the $612 million is for six Department of Energy projects in the areas affected by the two hurricanes to improve the resilience of the electricity grid.
