The assassination of the head of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement “Hamas” Ismail Haniyeh in the Iranian capital Tehran added more sadness to the atmosphere of the Gaza Strip.

Mr. Haniyeh was killed less than a day after Israel carried out a separate strike on a Hezbollah commander in a suburb of Beirut, in retaliation for a strike over the weekend in an Israeli-controlled town that killed 12 children and teenagers.

The crime was received with reactions of anger at all Palestinian levels because of the great respect and appreciation that Haniyeh, nicknamed “Abu Al-Abd”, enjoys. He is known for his strong and charismatic relations with various components of the national and Islamic movement, and his constant presence and participation in popular events.

Haniya represents an “icon” for his neighbors in the Al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City, where he was born in 1962 to a refugee family.

As soon as the news of the assassination was announced, many statements and obituaries were issued from various Palestinian political and factional levels, describing Haniyeh as a “great national leader.” Loudspeakers in mosques in the Palestinian territories blared out his obituary and praised his virtues, and worshippers in Gaza performed the funeral prayer.

All the political spectrum of the Palestinian groups made their statements condemning the assassination. Mahmud Abbas considered his assassination as “coward and dangerous act”.

The representative of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization said that the assassination crime “…calls for more steadfastness and perseverance in the face of the occupation, and the necessity of achieving unity of the Palestinian forces and factions.”

Both Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine denounced the crime and said that this will lead to a wider war and a real loss for the resistance axe.

The assassination of the leader of Hamas is a big provocation and could be the beginning of fierce and violent reactions from all the Islamic world, which is already full of anger of what is going on in Gaza.
