According to the official authorities, 15 migrants were rescued and there are still two missing in the waters.
On Tuesday, at least one person was killed by the shipwreck of a boat in the waters of the Colombian Caribbean in which 18 migrants were traveling.
According to the official authorities, 15 migrants were rescued and there are still two missing in the waters.
The Navy said that sailors from the Coast Guard Station on the island of San Andres attend a “maritime disaster that occurred about a mile from the island, where a boat with migrants was apparently wrecked”.
“The Coast Guard Rapid Reaction Units of the Colombian Navy with the support of a Colombian Air Force aircraft are deployed in the search and rescue operation,” the Navy added, which did not elaborate on what happened.
Colombia is an important transit country on the new migratory routes to the U.S. due to its geographical position that serves as a bridge between South America and Central America, while not requiring a visa to several nationalities.
In the past year, a route has become popular across the Caribbean Island of San Andrés, which is part of Colombian territory and close to the coast of Nicaragua.
In clandestine boats from the archipelago to the Central American country, migrants manage to avoid the dangerous jungle of Darién, which divides Colombia from Panama.
