The rainy season in Bolivia has resulted in a devastating human and material toll, with a tragic death toll of 49, according to Juan Carlos Calvimontes, the Vice Minister of Civil Defense.
During the delivery of humanitarian aid in Rurrenabaque, one of the hardest-hit municipalities in the Beni region, Calvimontes expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and revealed that 81 municipalities have been declared disaster zones due to their inability to cope with the crisis.
The numbers are staggering: 324,699 families have been affected, 3,937 communities have suffered damage, and 708 homes have been completely destroyed. Additionally, 18 municipalities are in a state of emergency, with more expected to follow in the coming days. The situation remains critical, with the Vice Minister warning of an extremely difficult period that could last another month.
The Bolivian government has mobilized 4,020 military personnel and conducted 83 operations to address the impact of the floods, which have also triggered severe landslides on roads connecting the country’s western and eastern regions. These disasters have caused significant economic losses across various productive sectors.
To mitigate the crisis, the Senate approved a $75 million credit from the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, aimed at addressing natural disaster emergencies.
An initial delivery of 7.3 tons of humanitarian aid has been distributed to several affected areas, though more resources are urgently needed to tackle this severe emergency.
