Bolivia Reports Seven Forest Fires and New Record of Heat

Juan Carlos Calvimontes expressed his frustration at the lack of judicial sanctions for those responsible for starting the fires.

The deputy minister of civil defense of Bolivia, Juan Carlos Calvimontes, reported on Monday the deployment of a support contingent, consisting of 255 people, The European Commission has been working with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to combat the fires in the eastern part of the country.

Calvimontes said the new staff joins the 230 firefighters currently in the affected areas.

He also announced that on July 27, Bolivia recorded 10,424 new heat surges, a new record with more than 95% in the departments of Santa Cruz and Beni.

The politician stressed that as a result of the rains, monitoring work in the affected areas was suspended and expressed the hope that the rainfall will combat the drought, heat sources and fires.

He added, The activities to be carried out by forest fire fighters include fighting fires, carrying out land, air and river patrols to identify persons who are responsible for fire».

The most critical municipalities are Roboré, San Miguel, San Rafael and Concepción.

There are seven fires that still affect the region and they are located in the provinces of San Matías, San José de Chiquitos, Roboré, San Rafael, San Miguel and Concepción.
