Bolivian Coup D’Etat Attempter Zuñiga and Two Accomplices Are Transferred to Maximum Security Prison

The ousted former commander of the Bolivian Army Juan José Zuñiga and two other soldiers were transferred this Saturday to the maximum security prison of Chonchocoro, to serve in preventive detention for the “coup attempt” against the government of President Luis Arce.

Bolivia’s Information Agency (ABI) reports that Justice authorities “decided to send the three former military commanders to the maximum security prison in the municipality of Viacha, a neighbour of El Alto, for six months.” All three were charged with armed uprising and terrorism.
That same news agency says that Prosecutor’s Office argued the risks of “flight and obstruction of the investigation of this fact conjured the same day of the military takeover of Plaza Murillo” demanding Arce’s resignation and the liberation of the former coup d’etat attempter Jeanine Añez.
ABI informed that the coup leader and the other two military remained and spent the last three nights in cells of the FELCC, in the center of the city of La Paz, and that Zúñiga is the main accused of the attempted coup, because he led the military movement that involved the displacement of a strong military contingent.
Zuñiga led a military action last Wednesday with which, he said, he sought to “change the government cabinet” and “restore” democracy in Bolivia.
After arriving in a tankette at the presidential palace, he had a face to face with President Arce, who ordered him to withdraw the tankers and the soldiers who assisted him in the military invasion. After a few hours he was captured in the Army General Staff.
