Brazil officially took over the rotating presidency of the BRICS bloc (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) on January 1st, ushering in a year focused on strengthening cooperation among nations of the Global South and pushing for a restructuring of the existing international order.

The move, coming at a time of rising geopolitical tensions, marks a renewed effort to build an alternative system that is less dominated by Western powers.

The Brazilian government, in a statement outlining its agenda, emphasized the importance of the BRICS grouping as a vital platform for political and diplomatic engagement among nations of the Global South.

The expansion of the BRICS, now including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, and Iran, further bolsters the bloc’s influence and its potential to reshape global power dynamics.

With the theme “Strengthening South-South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” Brazil is signaling its intent to prioritize issues of critical importance to developing nations.

This presidency marks a significant opportunity to challenge the neo-colonial structures of global finance and trade, with Brazil focused on developing payment systems that circumvent traditional Western-dominated financial networks.

This focus on “de-dollarization” is a key demand from many left-leaning economists, who see it as essential to breaking the cycle of dependence and vulnerability experienced by the Global South.

Among the key priorities of the Brazilian government is promoting the idea of an inclusive and responsible approach to artificial intelligence that serves the interests of the developing world.

They are also working to improve financial structures designed to tackle the climate crisis, pushing for a more equitable distribution of resources to combat the effects of climate change and fund transitions to renewable energy.

Furthermore, Brazil intends to use its BRICS presidency to promote public health cooperation among the member countries.

This is particularly significant in light of the unequal distribution of healthcare resources and vaccine access seen during the recent global pandemic.

This highlights the need for self-reliance and collaboration among nations that have traditionally been left behind.Over 100 meetings are scheduled to take place in Brasilia between February and July, with the BRICS Summit scheduled for July in Rio de Janeiro.

These meetings are expected to foster dialogue and solidify new strategies for collective action. The Brazilian presidency of BRICS is not simply a rotation of leadership, it’s a call for fundamental change in the architecture of global governance.

This initiative comes at a time where the old order is visibly fraying, and the countries of the Global South are no longer willing to accept their place at the margins of the global system. This presidency may very well serve as a turning point in the movement toward a more just and equitable world.
