The social network X began to be suspended in Brazil this Saturday after major operators of the country complied with the decision of a judge of the Supreme Court of Justice in breach of judicial orders by the magnate owner of the platform Elon Musk.

The country’s X blocking is in compliance with the decision of the minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes, who decided on Friday 30 to suspend X in Brazil if Musk doesn’t called for a legal representative in the coutry.

National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) reported, also on Friday, that it was summoned by the Supreme Court on the decision for the suspension of the operation of X and that “is complying with the determinations contained therein.”

De Moraes also determined daily fines of 50,000 reais (almost 9,000 dollars or 8,064 euros) to those who try to access the social network through the Virtual Private Network (VPN), a tool that creates a secure connection between a device and the internet and is used to protect privacy ‘online’.

The Agency has contacted 20,000 Internet providers in Portugal to implement the plan. The list includes large companies such as Claro, TIM and Vivo, as well as other local service companies.

Another measure ordered by Moraes involves removing the application from virtual stores of companies such as Apple and Google, with the aim of preventing new downloads by mobile users.

The sentence is part of an investigation for spreading false news in which the South African businessman is suspected of having committed crimes of obstruction of justice, criminal organization and incitement to crime.

De Moraes stated that he made this determination because of “X’s non-compliance with court orders” and the “attempt to not submit to the Brazilian legal system” with the intention of “instituting an atmosphere of total impunity and lawless land”.

This is not the first time that the Brazilian Justice determines the suspension of a social network. It has already happened with YouTube (2007), WhatsApp (2015 and 2016) and Telegram (2023) due to lack of collaboration in several judicial investigations.
