The BRICS summit of heads of state, a forum of emerging economies created by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, will take place in Rio de Janeiro on July 6 and 7, 2025, confirmed Brazil’s Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira.

Accompanied by the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paés, the chancellor announced the venue and dates in a video published on the mayor’s social media.

“The president (Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva) authorized me to announce that the meeting of the BRICS heads of state will be in Rio de Janeiro, in July, on the 6th and 7th, when we will welcome in the city the leaders of the 20 countries that are full members and partners of BRICS,” Vieira stated in the video.

Brazil assumed the rotating presidency of BRICS on January 1, a forum founded in 2009, and currently includes Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia as full members, although the latter has not yet formalized its membership.

Associated states include Bolivia and Cuba from Latin America, along with Belarus, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Nigeria.

This year’s Summit will face and discuss the US president Donald Trump threads to impose 100% tariffs to the BRICS State Members for “trying to move away from the dollar,” as well as worldwide conflicts and wars.

Last Summit was hosted in the Russian city of Kazan. BRICS, which includes Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia, is consolidating as a democratic deliberation space that challenges the hegemony of the G7, composed of countries like the United States and Japan. The Kremlin emphasizes that BRICS does not seek to replace the UN, but rather complement it.

Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that the combined production of BRICS exceeds 60 trillion dollars, surpassing the economic participation of the G7. The Russian authorities are trying to use their chairmanship of the group to counter what they consider “exclusive clubs” from the West that impose their vision on other countries.
