Brazil: Crash Plane Left 60 Missing Persons and No Survivors

The airline confirmed the accident, but has not yet provided details of the status of passengers and crew.

An aircraft with 58 passengers and four crew members crashed in a town in the interior of the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, early this afternoon on Friday, sources at Guarulhos airport in that region confirmed.

According to Voepass Linhas Aéreas, the airline owner of the aircraft, it is a turboprop passenger plane, model ATR-72, which departed from Cascavel (Paraná) with destination to Guarulhos (Sao Paulo). No information on the victims yet.

According to a statement by Voepass, the company says it used all means to support those involved. There is no confirmation yet of how the accident occurred or of the current status of the persons on board».

The Military Police said they received the call at 13H28 (16H28 UTC) on Rua João Edueta, near the Miguel Melhado de Campos Road (SP-324), and sent teams to the site. According to the Municipality of Vinhedo, the plane was located in the residential condominium Recanto Florido.

Hospitals of Vinhedo and Valinhos (both in the state of Sao Paulo), are being mobilized to receive potential injured. Fire, civil protection and military police arrive at the scene of the incident.

For its part, the management of the Regional Airport of Cascavel informed that it is waiting for information from the airline «which, at the moment, is the only body with official information».

The ATR 72 is a twin-engine turboprop commercial aircraft for regional and short-haul flights built in France and Italy by the company ATR. It has a maximum capacity of 78 seats and is manned by two people.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, after being informed of the events in a public act, requested a minute’s silence: «I have to be the bearer of a very bad news and I want to ask everyone to stand up for a minute of silence because a plane has just fallen in the city of Vinhedo, in São Paulo, with 58 passengers and 4 crew members and it seems that all died», said Lula to the attendees.

The video with the statement was published by the president on social networks, in which the president also offered all the solidarity to the families and friends of the victims.

The Nicaraguan government immediately expressed its solidarity with the Brazilian people and government over the tragic events.

In an official statement, the Government of Nicaragua stated: “We extend our fraternal solidarity to the families and friends of the victims, and we ask God for the eternal rest of our brothers who have moved on to another plane of life, and the necessary spiritual comfort for all their families”.
