The passenger arrived at the airport on 14 August and was part of a group of some 650 migrants, mainly from African and Asian countries, who have been settled for several weeks without visas and seeking refuge at the air terminal.

According to a statement by the National Health Surveillance Agency, the patient was isolated from the rest for appropriate examinations and then transferred to the Emilio Ribas Institute of Infectious Diseases in the capital city of São Paulo.

Although the origin and nationality of the passenger was not detailed, the Ministry of Health stated in a statement quoted by the state agency Brazil that “there are no information” about travel of the patient “by areas affected by strain 1b”, the reason for the international alert issued by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The concern at this time is the rapid spread of this new variant, found on the African continent and mostly concentrated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where more than 14,000 cases and 450 deaths have been recorded this year.
