Brazil’s polling stations closed on the afternoon of Sunday for the second round of municipal elections in 51 major cities in the country, and now the results are counted by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), a process that is expected to last between three and four hours.

The main political battle is in São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil and South America, where the current mayor, Ricardo Nunes, seeks re-election against the candidate of the left Guilherme Boulos.

Nunes has been timidly supported by Bolsonaro, while Boulos has the public backing of Lula, who has participated in some candidate’s rallies during the campaign.

Beyond São Paulo, fourteen other regional capitals will hold the second round this Sunday: Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre, Manaus, Belém, Campo Grande, Cuiabá, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Goiânia, João Pessoa, Natal, Palmas, Porto Velho and Aracaju.

The president of the TSE, Carmen Lucia Antunes, said at a press conference prior to the count that the day was going on with “absolute tranquility” and called on citizens to participate in the vote.

“We are having a democratic election Sunday without any difficulties,” the judge said.

The Federal Police reported that until 2.30 pm local time (5.30 pm GMT) they had taken 19 people to a police station on suspicion of electoral crimes, ranging from irregular propaganda to vote-buying.
