Brazil: Riot police shoot indigenous people during protest in Dourados

On the morning of Wednesday, the Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI) reported the invasion of the Military Police Shock Troops of Mato Grosso do Sul in the village of Jaguapiru, in the Indian Reserve of Dourados, Brazil.The indigenous residents of the village were holding a peaceful protest to denounce the chronic lack of water that has afflicted a significant part of the population of the Dourados Reserve for decades, according to CIMI.The Military Police of Mato Grosso do Sul stormed into the site to quell the protest, shooting two Guaraní participants at close range, as shown in a video published by the Council.In the publication, officers drop a man to the ground and a woman tries to intervene, at which point the police shoot him on the ground.Also, a woman ends up being beaten in the leg by the agents, who also threw bombs at the community and brutally arrested a group of indigenous people.According to the country’s Constitution, the indigenous area is under federal jurisdiction, so that the actions of the Military Police in the village of Jaguapiru are illegal.The violent police force’s break-in at the indigenous reserve follows a failed attempt to reach an agreement to end the protests.According to Campo Grande News, the State Secretariat of Justice and Public Security (SEJUSP) of Mato Grosso do Sul sent an official document committing to drill two wells in the reserve with a budget of 250,000 reais ( about $42,490).The village leaders did not accept the proposal, so they maintained roadblocks on the roads, claiming that the amount was insufficient and also demanding immediate drilling of wells.
