Brazil: Two Deads and 22 Injured Due to the Collapse of a Roof

At least two people were killed and 22 injured when the roof of a Catholic shrine in the northeastern city of Recife collapsed on Friday, official sources said.

The accident took place in the sanctuary of Morro da Conceição, in the northern area of Recife, while basic food baskets were distributed to the most vulnerable population, according to the government of the state of Pernambuco.
According to helicopter images transmitted by the Globo network, the metal roof of the church, on which there were solar panels that had just been installed, almost completely collapsed, keeping the four walls of the building standing.
The fatalities are a 54-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman, according to Brazilian authorities.
Recife’s mayor, João Campos, told reporters that “most of the injuries are mild”.
The 22 injured were taken to ambulances and hospitals in the area, some of whom were removed from the rubble by neighbours passing nearby.
Nearly half a hundred police and fire fighters are now working to break through the metal roof in search of new victims, although an initial inspection of the tracking dogs seems to indicate that there are no more deaths.
On the other hand, police experts and Civil Defense technicians inspected the site to clarify if the collapse “has any connection with the recent installation of solar panels” on the roof of the church, according to Campos.
“It’s a very painful time for our city. We are ready to alleviate all that pain. The absolute priority is to take care of the lives of the victims,” said the mayor, who decreed three days of official mourning in the city.
Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who this Friday met agenda in the state of Paraíba, also in the northeast of the country, expressed solidarity with the victims through social networks.
With great sadness I learned of the two deaths and dozens of wounded, some in serious condition, at the sanctuary of Morro da Conceição. A tragedy. My solidarity with the victims, their families, friends and the city of Recife at this time”, said the president.
