«The agreement is a concrete contribution to an economically viable Palestinian state», said the Brazilian government.

The free trade agreement with Palestine was ratified on Tuesday by Brazil, the first country of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) to sign it according to the declarations of the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In this sense, the Brazilian President, Lula da Silva, announced it at the 64th Mercosur Summit of Heads of State, in Paraguay, and declared that this agreement allows the entry of Palestinian products without customs restrictions.

“Duty-free access to European Union (EU) markets for Palestinian industrial products and a gradual elimination of tariffs on EU exports to Palestine for five years” is one of the bets that the agreement foresees.

“The agreement is a concrete contribution to an economically viable Palestinian state that can live in peace and harmony with its neighbors,” said the Brazilian government, while strengthening the regulatory framework aimed at expanding trade between Mercosur and the Middle East countries.

Local platforms also ensure that this agreement covers trade in goods; rules of origin; bilateral safeguards; technical regulations, standards and procedures for assessment and compliance; sanitary and phytosanitary measures; technological cooperation; institutional arrangements and dispute resolution.

On Monday, the Brazilian government made a statement following Israel’s arbitrary decision to increase the number of illegal settlements in the West Bank.

“Brazil repudiates the announced repressive nature of such a decision, in the context of the legitimate and successful campaign undertaken by the Palestinian State in search of its recognition and full integration into the international community,” the Government insisted.
