‘It is impossible to have any evidence that could raise doubts about the authority of the CNE,’ they said

On Tuesday, the Brazilian Association of Jurists for Democracy (ABJD) called for the results of the presidential elections in Venezuela, as released by the National Electoral Council (CNE), to be respected.

In a public letter, the ABJD stated that there are no grounds to question the re-election of President Nicolas Maduro. The group described how the Venezuelan voting process works and indicated that the results of the July 28 elections align with the country’s electoral standards.

“The participating political organizations were able to monitor the expression of voters several times during the election, which made the election results difficult to manipulate. There was no objective legal evidence of any act, element, or fact that could cast doubt on the integrity of the electoral process and voting system,” the ABJD said.

For the group of Brazilian jurists, it is impossible to have any evidence that could “raise doubts about the authority of the CNE.”

The ABJD also noted that Venezuelan electoral authorities delayed the vote count due to a cyberattack on the electoral system on the day of the presidential elections. This claim was assessed by the Supreme Court of Justice, which confirmed the veracity of the attacks. Currently, the CNE’s website remains offline.

The letter concludes by stating that members of the ABJD delegation found the electronic voting process to be reliable since it is auditable at all stages and meets all the requirements demanded by Venezuelan electoral law.

“Electronic voting in Venezuela is secure. What could be done is to have a stronger security system, limit the possibility of attacks, and respond more quickly,” said Martonio Mont’Alverne Barreto, a member of the ABJD. The Brazilian jurists’ organization also referenced the violent acts promoted by the far-right opposition the day after the elections.
