According to the authorities, this is Marcos Geleia, arrested in the city of Cascavel, in the southern state of Paraná, and who despite his status as a fugitive managed to register as a candidate for councilor in the neighboring town of Céu Azul for municipal elections in October.

Geleia had been under a preventive detention order since last year, when it was found that he participated in the violent assault on the offices of the Presidency, Parliament and the Supreme Court on 8 January 2023.

According to a peridist investigation by the G1 group, two other fugitives accused of participating in this coup attempt have also managed to register as candidates for council and are wanted by the Federal Police.

The ruse was promoted by extreme right activists led by former president Jair Bolsonaro, defeated at the polls in 2022 by the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and aimed to incite the Armed Forces to overthrow the progressive leader, who had taken power a week earlier.

For these acts, some 1,400 were formally charged before the Supreme Court and 227 have already been sentenced to prison terms ranging from three to 17 years after being found guilty of attempted coup d’Ă©tat and qualified damage to public property, among other offences.

Another 200 have accepted responsibility and signed judicial agreements for the provision of community services, among other measures that the Justice defines as “educational” and include courses on democracy and human rights.
