During the operation, which lasted approximately two hours, the bleeding detected between the skull and the brain was drained, resulting from the fall he suffered at home on October 19.
“The hematoma was removed, the brain is now decompressed; brain function is preserved,” and “he is free of sequelae,” stated doctors at the Sirio-Libanes Hospital, where Lula is expected to remain hospitalized until likely next Monday.
Lula will stay in the intensive care unit for the next 48 hours “as a precaution” before being moved to a regular ward. “The important thing is that he did not sustain any brain injury,” and “the hematoma was completely drained,” the doctors emphasized.
On Monday night, the 79-year-old Brazilian leader went to a medical center in Brasilia after experiencing “a headache” and “discomfort.” After undergoing an MRI, doctors detected an intracranial hemorrhage.
The head of state was then urgently transported to São Paulo, where he underwent surgery to drain the hematoma detected in his head. “The surgery proceeded without complications,” the medical center reported.
The bulletin specifies that the hemorrhage is a result of the fall he suffered on October 19 at the Palacio da Alvorada, the official residence of the Brazilian Presidency in Brasilia, for which he required five stitches in the back of his neck.
