Paulo Gonet filed a complaint before the Supreme Court, charging the far-right politician with conspiring to stage a coup.

On Tuesday, Brazil’s Attorney General accused former President Jair Bolsonaro of accepting a plan to assassinate President Lula da Silva through poisoning in order to remain in power after losing the 2022 elections.

Attorney General Paulo Gonet filed a complaint before the Supreme Court, charging Bolsonaro and 33 others with conspiring to stage a coup to prevent Lula from taking office. They devised an attack plan against Brazilian institutions called “Green and Yellow Knife,” a designation referencing the colors of the Brazilian flag. Gonet stated that this plan was known and accepted by then-President Bolsonaro.

The Attorney General based his accusation on an extensive police report released in November 2024, which reveals that Bolsonaro had “full knowledge” of the potential assassination. The prosecution asserts that the accused also sought to “neutralize” the Supreme Court and considered “the use of war weapons” against Judge Alexandre de Moraes.

Among the defendants are high-ranking military officials and former ministers of Bolsonaro’s administration. They allegedly aimed to achieve “total control over the three branches of government” and establish a “central cabinet” with the intention of “organizing a new order” without Lula in power.

The text reads, “Jornal Nacional informs all Brazilians that Bolsonaro was charged by the PGR with criminal organization, coup d’état, and violent abolition of the democratic rule of law. Great day! Hey, you’re going to be arrested!”

To achieve this, they planned to create a climate of “social upheaval capable of dragging the Army High Command into the coup attempt,” which ultimately did not happen. In the initial phase of the anti-democratic plan, Bolsonaro and his supporters carried out “monitoring actions” targeting Lula and Judge De Moraes. The plan included the killing of the targets using explosives, war instruments, or poisoning.

The Attorney General accused Bolsonaro of “leading” the coup conspiracy and charged him with crimes such as “attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law,” “armed criminal organization,” and “coup d’etat.”

The Supreme Court will now decide whether to accept the complaint and prosecute the far-right politician and the other accused individuals. Hours before the complaint was made public, Bolsonaro, who claims to be a victim of lawfare, told reporters that he had “no concerns” about it.

“This complaint is a fundamental step in the defense of democracy and the rule of law,” said lawmaker Gleisi Hoffmann, the president of the Workers’ Party (PT).
